I. Introduction

Hunan University (HNU) is situated in Changsha, a renowned historical and cultural city. It is adjacent to the rippling Xiangjiang River on its front and picturesque Yuelu Mountain at its back.It is reputed as "a Millennium-Old Academy and a Century-Old Famous University." HNU has been designated as a state key university and included in China's "Project 211" "Project 985" and "Double First-Class" Initiative. Originating from Yuelu Academy, which was founded in 976 AD., HNU has consistently maintained its cultural education mission for over 1,000 years, making it an embodiment of higher education in China. Reorganized into the Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903, HNU was officially renamed Hunan University in 1926, and was designated as one of the 16 state universities in 1937. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Li Da, one of the major founders and early leaders of the Communist Party of China, was appointed as the first president of HNU. Late Chairman inscribed the name of the university. In 2000, HNU and the Hunan Institute of Finance and Economics merged to form the HNU of today. Chinese President Xi Jinping inspected HNU on September 17th, 2020. He spoke highly of personnel cultivation and cultural inheritance of the university, and put forward that Yuelu Academy is the origin of the ideological line "Seeking Truth from Facts" of the Party.

HNU firmly implements General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions on China-Africa relations and actively serves the national strategy of China-Africa cooperation. It has been selected into the Ministry of Education’s "20+20 Cooperation Program for Chinese and African Universities", the BRICS Network University Alliance, and the "China-Africa 100 Universities Cooperation Program" (Trade and Investment Sector). The university has established institutions such as the China-Africa Economic & Trade Research Institute, China-Africa Cultural Exchange Center, Intelligent Lab for China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation, China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation CPPCC Members’ Studio (Hunan Province), and China-Africa Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research Center, so as to promote the high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation.

Founded in October 2024, Institute of African Studies is the first secondary-level entity teaching and research unit focusing on African regional studies among domestic universities under the "Double First-Class" initiative. Relying on two national platforms for China-Africa economic and trade cooperation settled in Hunan—the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo and the Pilot Zone for In-depth China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation, as well as the university’s advantageous disciplines including Economics and Business (ranked in the top 1% of ESI global disciplines) and International Trade (a national key discipline), the institute leverages the distinctive advantages of platforms such as the National Supercomputing Center in Changsha (the third of its kind in China and the first in central and western China) and the “Millennium-Old Academy” Yuelu Academy. Inheriting the educational philosophy of China’s first industrial foreign trade major, with China-Africa economic and trade cooperation as the driving force, it strives to build a first-class talent team, focus on the development of Country and Region Studies, and create a research highland with international reputation, authority and influence.

II. Requirements

1.Uphold the CPC's lines, principles and policies, abide by national laws and regulations, and possess good moral character.

2.Major: Applied Economics, Theoretical Economics, Information Management and Information Systems, Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration and other related majors.

3.Typically, hold a doctoral degree obtained within 3 years and under 35 years of age.

4.Demonstrate strong research potential, academic ethics and comprehensive capabilities.

5.Full-time research at the university.

III. Salary and Benefits

1.Hexi Postdoctoral Fellows: up to 540,000 RMB/year + matching funds funds from the Institute and supervisor.

2.Key salary: 240,000 RMB/year + matching funds funds from the Institute and supervisor.

3.General salary: 160,000 RMB/year + matching funds funds from the Institute and supervisor.

Full-time postdoctoral researchers may apply for the National Postdoctoral Funding Program (Tiers A, B, and C; Tier A corresponds to the "Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program"). Upon selection, in addition to the key benefits, recipients will receive corresponding national funding (280,000 RMB/year, 180,000 RMB/year, or 120,000 RMB/year).

IV. Supporting

1.Eligibility for Changsha City talent subsidies (including living and housing subsidies of 130,000-220,000 RMB) and a one-time Hunan Province subsidy (15,000 RMB).

2.Postdoctoral service duration counts toward work experience at the university. For postdoctoral researchers without prior work experience, their employment start date is recorded from the date of joining the program

3.After evaluation by the university, postdoctoral researchers may qualify for the title of Associate Researcher (separate quota allocation).

4.Enjoy the same research achievement rewards as faculty members. Eligibility for university residency registration during the postdoctoral period, with children receiving the same childcare and school enrollment benefits as faculty children.

5.Implementation of the "Hexi Postdoctoral" program to incentivize outstanding postdoctoral researchers. Selected candidates will be prioritized for provincial, municipal, and national postdoctoral talent programs.

6.High-level research achievements (with Hunan University as the primary affiliation) during the postdoctoral period will be included in the university and college performance-based incentive distributions.
