MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research

The laboratory of Prof. Massimo Palmarini at the MRC- University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research is seeking a post-doc / Research Assistant/Associate with a PhD and research experience in virology. The aim of this project is to exploit synthetic biology, as well as established molecular methods, for the development of a universal vaccine platform that can be rapidly deployed against any African horse sickness virus (AHSV) serotype, including potentially new emerging (or previously uncharacterised) strains.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) - University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is a unique international research centre with a critical mass of researchers dedicated to the study of human and animal viral diseases. Prof. Palmarini’s laboratory studies the biology and pathogenesis of animal viruses (e.g. see Chessa et al [2009] Science, 324: 532; Murgia et al [2011] PLoS Pathogens 7 (3): e1002014; Varela et al ) and it has recently started a new exciting programme on bluetongue virus and relatedOrbiviruses including African horse sickness virus (e.g. see Ratinier et al [2011] PLoS Pathogens 7(12): e1002477; Caporale et al [2011] Journal of Virology 85:11479; Caporaleet al [2014] 87:10752; Nunes et al [2014] Journal of Virology Aug 20. pii: JVI.02183-14. [Epub ahead of print). 

African horse sickness is one of the major infectious diseases of horses. The disease is caused by an arbovirus (African horse sickness virus, AHSV) transmitted from infected to uninfected hosts by the biting midge. AHSV is closely related to Bluetongue virus (BTV) another arbovirus transmitted by biting midges. Prof. Palmarini’s laboratory works on various aspects of AHSV and BTV biology and pathogenesis.  

The Laboratory is placed in the Sir Michael Stoker Building in a beautiful park in the Garscube Estate within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences and is funded by competitive grants from the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council. The University of Glasgow is one of the top research Institutions in the United Kingdom and enjoys a strong commitment to virology.

The position is for 3 years and appointment at Grade 6 or 7 depending on experience of the candidate (Salary at Grade 6 is between £27,057 - £30,434 while at Grade 7 it is between £33,242 - £37,394 per annum).
