Postdoc position (2-years) focused on Cancer Metastasis and Combinational Treatment using Artificial Intelligence Models

The Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, seeks a postdoctoral scientist in studies of cancer metastasis and combinational treatment using AI models. The position is full-time for two years with access as soon as possible or by agreement. Deadline for application: 20 April 2022.

Background and description of work tasks

We will assist the computer scientists to develop an artificial intelligence predictive model based on genomic, epigenomic and proteomic data at single cell level to predict disease progression and design tailored treatment strategies.

Work task:

1. To perform multiplex gene expression analysis by using clinical samples and individual cancer cells and immune cells. Investigate and compare large numbers of candidate genes related to KRAS, PI3K/AKT and PIP5K1α pathways in individual cells between the primary tumors and metastatic lesions.

2. Establish cell line-models, organoid and animal models for testing for targeted drug validation and characterization for metastatic cancer under EU-REVERT Consortium.

3. Establish and utilize xenograft mouse models that recapitulate growth of primary tumors and formation of distant metastasis Investigate the prognostic values of tumor-specific signatures in primary tumours and metastatic lesions in predictive of distant metastasis.

4. Apply Artificial Intelligence Predictive models to validate on the large data from clinical databases of various types of metastatic cancer which share similar oncogenic pathways and mutations, in particular, KRAS pathways.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a University degree equivalent to a European University PhD degree in cancer biology, cell biology, or patho-biology (or equivalent fields) and be very skilful in bioinformatics at the time of the recruitment. To be eligible, you should have completed your PhD degree a maximum of four years before the end of the application period, unless special circumstances such as parental leaves exist.

The ideal candidate should have academic ambitions and independent research skills and critical thinking and leadership quality. The candidate should have a strong drive in research and teaching. Candidates must have documented theoretical and practical experience in broad areas including tumor biology, patho-biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, animal models and fluorescence microscopy.

Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English. Because the project will be of collaborative nature, candidates need to be able to work productively not only independently, but also in a team. Excellent communication skills are required for interacting effectively with senior colleagues and peers, including colleagues from complementary research fields.
