Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Description

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 3 years with the possibility of extending to 5 years depending on pace of progress and publication record (subject to funding).

The postdoc will work on a project aiming to develop sensitive single molecule optical experiments capable of operating down to the single-photon level. The project will aim to perform spectroscopy on single biomolecules (natural and artificially engineered) to study the phenomena arising from light-matter interaction in biosystems, including measuring non-classical correlations in the optical signals using a Hanbury Brown Twiss set-up and conformational changes in single-molecules.

Prior experience of optics techniques and of developing optical setups, such as SERS, FLIM, FRET, SMLM, would be advantageous.

The candidate will collaborate with different groups within the Condensed Matter Physics and Biophysics sub-departments and will be supported by teams with expertise in single-molecule optical biophysics techniques and quantum optics.

The post holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Essential

1. Applicants should possess or be close to obtaining a PhD in physics, materials, chemistry, nanoscience, biophotonics, nanophotonics, fluorescence imaging, or a related discipline

2. Proficient in using and assembling custom optical setups rather than commercial plug-and-play systems

3. Knowledge of fundamental biophysics principles and keenness to learn

4. Experience working with single molecule fluorescence probes, such as fluorescent proteins or organic dyes, or fluorescent nanoparticles

5. Solid knowledge of techniques such as Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), SMLM, FLIM, and FRET Holbein, J. et al, 2010 Phys. Biol. 7 031001. Previous experience applying these techniques to single-molecules are an advantage.

6. Evidence of relevant publications and ability to direct research independently

7. Willingness to work collaboratively, openly, to participate actively in group discussions, and to support and nurture junior group members

Desirable

1. Experience working with self-labelling proteins such as Halo-tags or SNAP- tags

2. Experience with time-resolved spectroscopy

3. Experience with handling cryogens and work at low temperatures

4. Experience with laboratory software, such as LabVIEW
