The terahertz frequency range (100 GHz to 3 THz) is an emerging area for the electromagnetic spectrum for many chemical, biological and security sensing applications. One area where terahertz is predicted to have a significant impact is in biology, particularly biological liquids. However, the relatively long wavelength of terahertz radiation poses a barrier towards the characterisation of small quantities of biological liquids and new techniques are required to improve the sensitivity and reduce the sample size.
The aim of this EPSRC funded project led by Dr Stephen Hanham is to develop a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) device for biological liquid sensing by integrating terahertz sensors into microfluidic chips. These LOC devices will be capable of rapidly sensing free-flowing bio-liquids and are expected to lead to a 10x increase in sensing sensitivity, allowing single cells to be analysed.
Role Summary
Candidates are invited to apply for a postdoctoral researcher position in the Emerging Devices and Technologies Lab in the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will lead the research activities towards the realisation of a combined terahertz fluid sensor and microfluidic chip that pushes the limits of sensitivity for the measurement of a range of chemical and biological liquids. The project will involve designing terahertz resonators and performing electromagnetic simulations, high frequency microwave/terahertz characterisation and cleanroom fabrication. The project will benefit from collaborations with the Healthcare Technologies Institute at the University of Birmingham and the Department of Materials at Imperial College London.
Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
• Lead the daily research activities related to the project • Analyse and interpret data and apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research- related administration
Person Specification
• First degree in electrical engineering, physics or equivalent qualification • Hold or close to completing a PhD degree relevant to the project area • Demonstrable experience working with microwave, mm-wave or terahertz technologies • Experience performing electromagnetic simulations in CST, HFSS or similar • Cleanroom fabrication experience highly desired • Ability to communicate complex information clearly • Ability to work independently
