Organisation position and purpose

This post is funded by industry partners and Veterinary Vaccine Manufacturing & Innovation Centre (Vet VMIC) to develop multivalent herpesvirus vectored vaccines. The post holder will broadly work on generation of different HVT vectored vaccines using BAC technology and/or CRISPR/Cas9 editing system, cell culture systems for improved vaccine production, and investigate the cell free production mechanisms of avian herpesvirus vaccines. Our current projects involve gene function studies of both viruses and hosts to identify the determinants associated with pathogenesis and latency/reactivation, as well as recombinant herpesvirus vectored vaccine development using state-of-the-art technologies including reverse genetics on viral genomes, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, global CRISPR screening, CRISPRi/CRISPRa tools and bioimaging technologies.

The successful candidate will be required to manage the research project, work independently and liaise with all members of the team, as well as other research groups. You will become a pivotal member of the team striving to bring innovation and will support the group by delivering excellent high-impact research. You will perform key research, administrative and management duties and report directly to the Head of the Group.

Main duties and responsibility

  • The post-holder will carry out research to meet the objectives outlined in the industry-funded projects to develop multivalent avian herpesvirus vectored vaccine using BAC engineering and CRISPR/Cas9 editing technologies, engineer the cell line for increased vaccine production, and investigate the cell free production mechanisms of avian herpesvirus vaccines.
  • Contributing to develop new models, techniques and methods.
  • Generating high impact research publications based on the findings from the research projects.
  • Prepare regular brief reports for collaborators, and contribute to video conference discussions with collaborators.
  • Contributing towards the Knowledge exchange, business development and outreach programmes of the Institute.
  • Participate in the operational and academic management activities.
  • Interact with other members of the group as well as other groups on wider aspects of research innovations into the control of avian viral diseases.
  • Actively participate in Pirbright Laboratory quality assurance system in conjunction with the Institute Quality Manager. Employees are also expected to safeguard their own health and safety and security by following Institute’s policies.

Specific requirements

Essential

  • PhD degree in a virology, cell biology, another relevant field of biology or equivalent
  • Proven experience on advanced molecular biological techniques such as reverse genetics through BAC mutagenesis and/or CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
  • Proven experience of research in virology, immunity, cell biology or molecular biology
  • Experience of a variety of general virology or molecular biology techniques and cell culture techniques
  • A track record of publications in quality peer-reviewed international journals
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, including industrial collaborators
  • Evidence of networking skills and the ability to liaise with research collaborators and industrial partners
  • Decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Enthusiastic and innovative

Desirable

  • Evidence in time management skills, and able to plan own work, and meeting objectives without day-to-day monitoring
  • Evidence of networking skills with the ability to build effective collaborative relationships
  • Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft office packages, experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
  • Evidence of experience and vision to carry out scientific research in a multi-disciplinary environment

Organisation position and purpose

The successful candidate will join the Viral Oncogenesis group at Pirbright Institute and report to the Head of the Group. Our research has focused on investigation of host/virus interactions to unravel the molecular mechanisms of tumour formation by avian oncogenic viruses using state-of-the-art technologies including reverse genetics on viral genomes, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, global CRISPR screening, CRISPRi/CRISPRa tools, bioimaging technologies and animal infection model. The purpose of this position is to work on ‘Transmissible vaccines on disease ecology and pathogen evolution’, a collaborative project with Penn State University. We are looking for highly motivated virologist to deliver the milestones of the project.

The successful candidate will be required to manage the objectives of the international collaborative research project examining the role of transmissible vaccines on virus evolution dynamics using established experimental infection models. Working independently and in liaison with members of the team and other research groups, the position offers the opportunity to become a pivotal member of the team striving to bring innovation through high-impact research. The postholder will also have the prospects of working with the Head of the Group in management duties and supervision of students.

Main duties and responsibility

  • The post-holder will carry out research to meet the research project objectives of exploring models of transmissible vaccination to identify knowledge gaps in transmission dynamics and virus evolution. Be responsible for driving the project, contributing to experimental design and data analysis.
  • Assisting in Laboratory management responsibilities (ordering, looking after equipment, maintenance, sample inventories) and animal experiments under the Project Licence managed by the group.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Contributing to develop new models, techniques and methods.
  • Contributing and helping to develop innovative research projects for securing additional funding.
  • Generating high impact research publications based on the findings from the research projects.
  • Prepare regular brief reports for collaborators and contribute to video conference discussions with collaborators.
  • Supporting senior colleagues to enhance the international impact of the Institute by participation in meetings, joint projects and other activities.
  • Contributing towards the Knowledge exchange, business development and outreach programmes of the Institute.
