Edith Cowan University is the second largest university in Perth, Western Australia. The University has a

growing international reputation for academic and research excellence, particularly in the field of Melanoma, Neurodegenerative Diseases and Sports Science.

The Melanoma Research Group has purpose built laboratories in the School of Medical Science in the Health, Exercise and Science Faculty of Edith Cowan University.

Australia has one of the highest incidences of melanoma in the world. Melanoma is also the most common cancer in young Australians aged 15-39 and the most common cancer related cause of death in young males. Once melanoma has metastasised it is extremely difficult to treat. Research to prevent metastasis

by early detection of tumour spread is vitally important.

We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work in an

NHMRC funded position under Professor Mel Ziman within her melanoma research laboratory.

Professor Ziman’s laboratory is involved in research to quantify and characterise circulating tumour cells as a marker of treatment response and to inform treatment decisions in melanoma patients. Her laboratory focuses on isolating circulating melanoma cells from peripheral blood using flow cytometry, immunomagnetic bead isolations followed by quantitative real time PCR, immunohistochemistry, droplet digital PCR and single cell analyses. We have published our research demonstrating that circulating cells can be isolated and quantified and that they show a pharmacodynamic response to treatment.

Strong collaborations with clinicians ensures the success of the program and the possibility of transferring

findings directly into the clinic.

Using microarray and mutation analysis we have also characterised the mutations within circulating cells and analysed the expression profiles of metastatic circulating cells (submitted for publication). We are currently in the process of culturing the cells in vitro and by xenotransplantation for further characterisation.

As a junior Postdoctoral Research Associate you will be responsible for experimental laboratory work, supervision of postgraduate students, computational analysis, and literature research and review. You will assist other more senior members of the laboratory in their research endeavours and be able to provide insight and ideas to further the work of the laboratory. You will have the opportunity to contribute to presentations and publications and to learn under the mentorship of experienced researchers.

To succeed you will have a PhD in an area relevant to cancer genetics and a strong background in cancer cell biology as well as well as a proven track record in terms of publications and research achievement adequate for an early career researcher. You will have skills in any number of the following: microscopy,

cell culture, immunofluorescence, RNA isolation and real time PCR, mutation analysis. Some knowledge of

melanoma and/or circulating tumour cell biology or single cell analyses would be advantageous.

The position is full-time fixed term for 12 months subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation

period for new appointees with the possibility of further offer of employment dependent upon funding and

need. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new

appointees.

Remuneration package: Academic Level A/B $62,197 – $88,738 (excluding 9% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
