About UQ

We are seeking a talented Postdoctoral Research Fellow with strong background in the fields of chemical, metallurgical or thermal engineering, particularly related with ironmaking and steelmaking, and associated numerical modelling with the computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD/DEM) simulation to work on the technology and engineering development of heat management and equipment and process designs for the zero-emission iron and steelmaking industry with hydrogen. The candidate will work with the research team and industrial partners to plan and execute the industrial project, which include heat exchanger design, hot blast and off gas reuse, hydrogen heating, mass and energy flow, techno-economic analysis, process optimisation, and scale-up the heating technology for iron and steelmaking industry.

The successful candidate is expected to have the background or equivalent field in thermal engineering or chemical and/or metallurgical engineering. The work will deal with the research of heating hydrogen and associated equipment and process designs using the computational fluid flow and discrete element method (CFD/DEM) simulation, including the techno-economic analysis to evaluate the energy cost and efficiency of our proposed iron and steelmaking route. The selected candidate should show creativity, teamwork, independence, self-motivation, leadership, and project management skills to ensure the deliveries of project objectives. Experience in R&D projects and research in thermal engineering and techno-economic model development is desirable.

Specifically, this position will focus on (1) developing a CFD/ DEM model to simulate the flow and heat transfer in shaft furnace hydrogen ironmaking process; (2) implementing heat exchanger for hydrogen preheat and developing the associated thermal management modelling in shaft furnace hydrogen ironmaking; and (3) publishing high-impact publications/presentations to promote the development in computational particle technology.

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in nanomedicine and extracellular vesicles. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research

· Design, set up and develop heating route for lump iron ore reduction with hydrogen.

· Conduct research on heat exchanger design, hot blast and off gas reuse, hydrogen heating, energy and heat flow, evaluate heat transfer technologies and processes, and techno-economic analysis.

· Optimise the heating route in terms of energy cost and utilization efficiency.

· Apply the computational fluid flow and discrete element method (CFD/DEM) simulation with machine learning in the application above.

· Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to plan and carry out innovative R&D projects to develop the heating technologies for iron ore pre-reduction with hydrogen.

· Quantitative and qualitative analysis of research results from experiments or models.

· Integrate the work from PhD students into the scale-up of the iron ore pre-reduction heating system and demonstrate the work to the key stakeholders.

· Write and edit scientific reports and publish high quality reports to stakeholders and publish high quality papers in internationally influential journals.

· Build connections with industrial partners and sponsors and academic people with expertise in the same area.

· Identify IP arising from research and facilitate its protection through established university procedures.

· Conduct techno-economic studies as part of strategies to integrate hydrogen heating unit into a steel-making plant.

Supervision and Researcher Development

· Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

· Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

· Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
