DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY / TE TARI MOROMOITI ME TE ĀRAI MATE SCHOOL OF PHARMACY AND SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
The School of Pharmacy has a number of established researchers working in the fields of organic, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. The Gamble Lab has a strong interest in synthetic and medicinal chemistry and has close ties to the Chemistry and Microbiology department at the University of Otago. The Pletzer Lab is located in the Microbiology & Immunology Department and has a focus on combating infectious diseases and reducing antimicrobial resistance.
We are part of the University of Otago and located in Dunedin, a culturally vibrant and diverse university city.
The role/Te mahi
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic full-time Postdoctoral Fellow, working on projects which span the fields of bioorganic chemistry, chemical biology and microbiology.
This project is funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) China – Maurice Wilkins Centre Collaborative Research Programme (C-MWC) and entitled ‘A Trojan-Horse strategy to enhance antibiotic uptake in drug resistant pathogens'.
This position is available as part of a collaboration of the Pletzer (microbiology) and Gamble (chemistry) laboratories at the University of Otago.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasing worldwide, leading to significant economic burden and ineffectiveness of current treatment options. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a priority pathogen with intrinsic antibiotic resistance. This research project will focus on new technologies to improve the effectiveness of current antibiotics towards P. aeruginosa.
The successful candidate will synthesize and evaluate novel drug conjugates that exploit transport proteins for improved intracellular delivery of antibiotics.
The successful candidate will have a passion for, and considerable hands-on experience, in bioorganic chemistry and/or chemical biology as well as microbiology, and its application in answering questions of biological significance.
It is expected that the candidate will be able to work independently with minimal supervision and assist in data analysis, interpretation and manuscript preparation.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
