As part of a collaboration within the Centre Interdisciplinaire d'Etudes pour la Défense et la Sécurité (CIEDS) at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, the aim is to explore how lightweight Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) technology Guo et al., 2023 Carelli et al., 2022, which is sometimes related to the blockchain family, could be used to support a collaborative, autonomous identity management system. Blockchain makes it possible to implement such an identity management system, classically known as Self- Sovereign Identity (SSI) web 2022. The advantages of DAGs include low transaction costs, energy-efficient write operations and no intermediaries to add one's own transactions. DAGs also make it possible to integrate objects with constraints in terms of computing capacity, storage, energy ... which would make it possible to meet the needs of establishing IMSs adapted to the Internet of Things Fedrecheski et al. 2020.
The paper Gebresilassie et al. 2020 proposes to use DAGs as building blocks for a DAG node identity management system, in particular to manage node reputation. However, the contribution remains very evasive on many key technical aspects such as conditions for enrolling nodes in the IMS, desired security properties, transaction content, security analysis, which still leaves many unknowns before an possible implementation within a POC.
The aim is to design an innovative opportunistic identity management system based on a DAG and to demonstrate its proof of concept.
