The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Houston is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to join an NSF DRK-12 funded project. This project will focus on middle school grades and take place in a highly diverse urban school district in Texas. In this project, highly supported co-design teams consisting of researchers, teachers, and science specialists will co-adapt existing district-generated science units by integrating socially and culturally relevant science practices and drawing on students' diverse language practices as strengths. The co-design teams will follow design-based research (DBR) models to iteratively develop, implement, refine, and test a model called RESET (Relevant Experiences in Science Education through Translanguaging). This project will provide foundational knowledge for the development of a teacher-researcher co-design model. The postdoc fellow will work closely with an interdisciplinary team with expertise in science education, bilingual education, literacy education, and educational psychology. This is a two-year researcher position with the possibility for extension depending upon satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include coordinating all research activities with school personnel and the research team. The candidate will participate in field research activities including recruiting teacher participants, facilitating co-design team meetings to adapt and implement refined science curricula, and coordinating data collection. The postdoc will also assist in instrument development, data management, data analysis, mentoring and supervising graduate students; preparing NSF annual reports, and writing research papers for presentations and publications

Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. No experience is required.

Additional Job Posting Information:

A Ph.D. in Science Education, Language, and Literacy Education, Bilingual/ESL Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field is required and must be completed by the start date of the position. The highly qualified candidates must demonstrate content and pedagogical knowledge in middle school science, general background in language, literacy, and bilingual education, and a strong commitment to promoting asset-oriented pedagogies through teacher professional development. Applicants must have strong data management and quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis skills. Experience with curriculum development, classroom intervention, and/or teacher training in culturally diverse K-12 settings is preferred. Applicants who are fluent in one or more languages in addition to English are also preferred. Outstanding working ethics, oral and written communication, and project management skills are required.
