The Integrated Devices, Electronics, And Systems (IDEAS) Group of ETH Zurich invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position in the field of integrated RF/Mm-Wave/THz antenna and antenna array designs for next- generation wireless communication and sensing.
The ETH IDEAS Group, led by Prof. Hua Wang, is a world-leading research group in the field of integrated circuits and systems for next-generation wireless communication, sensing, and various emerging technology applications.
One of our major research focuses is RF/mm-Wave/THz integrated circuits and systems. In particular, the ETH IDEAS group has a long and successful research track record on a wide variety of RF/mm-Wave/THz circuits and systems and their co-designs with antennas or antenna arrays to advance their performance and reconfigurability. Our past postdoc members and doctoral students regularly publish at flagship conferences and journals and have found excellent jobs both in top universities and industry.

This postdoc position lasts a minimum of two years, with a possible extension to the third year. ETH Zurich offers top postdoc salaries at the international level.
Project background
To address next-generation communication and sensing applications, the frontier of wireless research and technology has advanced into a new era of directional wireless links with extensive use of active antenna array systems. For example, the beyond-5G/6G and global satellite networks have stimulated a fast-growing need for scalable phased arrays or MIMO arrays. In these applications, the designs of antennas, antenna arrays, and their interfaces with electronics have become indispensable and will largely govern the performance, form factor, and cost of the entire wireless systems.
The overarching aim of this project is to innovate the designs of antennas, antenna arrays, and antenna-electronics interfaces at RF/mm-Wave frequencies for 5G/6G and next-generation satellite communication applications. The scope includes antennas and scalable antenna arrays on-chip, in package, and on PCB substrate.
Particular areas of interest include antenna-in-package, antenna-on-board/-on- chip, scalable antennas for SATCOM (Ku/Ka/Q/V bands), 5G (FR2 mm-Wave bands), 6G (FR3 bands and W/D bands), wideband antennas, AI/ML for unconventional antenna (array) designs, and passive/active scalable reflector arrays for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).
This postdoc position is jointly funded by EU grants as well as ETH Zurich internal funding. The research involves close collaborations with industry and university groups in Switzerland, the EU, and the US.
Job description
You will be responsible for the architecting, designing, prototyping, and testing of RF/mm-Wave antennas and scalable antenna arrays on chip, in package, and on PCB substrate. You will be responsible for performing antenna- IC packaging and building measurement setups. You will also be responsible for the project meetings, reporting, and proposal writing. You will also expected to facilitate the teaching and occasionally deliver lectures for RF/wireless classes in English at ETH Zurich.
With its cutting-edge research nature, this position also involves close collaborations with researchers in Switzerland, the EU, and the US.
Your profile
PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
A strong research and publication track record in RF/mm-Wave antenna and antenna array design, implementation, and testing
Experience in SATCOM antenna array design on PCB laminate is a plus
Experience in RF/mm-Wave IC designs, on-chip antennas and antenna- electronics interface design is a plus
Experience with design and implementation of RF/mm-Wave PCB boards and packaging
Experience with RF/mm-Wave IC chip packaging
Skills in building RF/mm-Wave electronics and antenna measurement setups using high-end electronics measurement equipment, RF/mm-Wave components, and automatic control interface for measurement equipment
Skills in data analytical tools
Independent individual who can both craft new projects and work collaboratively to achieve large-scale scientific goals
Excellent communication skills in English
Willingness to learn new knowledge and new methods
