Postdoc in Ice Core/Paleoclimate Science, Niels Bohr institutet
Copenhagen University
Postdoc position in instrument development for high precision, high resolution water isotope analysis of very old ice
Position A two-year postdoc position is available at the Water Isotope Laboratory of the Ice and Climate group at the University of Copenhagen. The focus of the position will be the development of the next generation, high-precision and high-resolution instrumentation for the analysis of the water isotope composition of the upcoming Oldest Ice Core within the Beyond EPICA project
Beyond EPICA is an EU-funded effort, consisting of 12 European research institutions with a goal to retrieve a continuous, high-resolution ice core record covering the Mid Pleistocene Transition, extending back to 1-1.5 million years.
The successful candidate will work on the parallel development of two new techniques, one involving ultra-high resolution ice core sample preparation using high-power femtosecond IR lasers and a second one making use of state- of-the-art microfluidic devices for performing long integration water isotope analysis on discrete ice core samples.
The researcher will be actively involved within the Water Isotope Consortium of the Beyond EPICA network with opportunities for collaboration and networking across the project's partners. There will also be opportunities for field work in Greenland or/and Antarctica during the period of employment depending on the researcher's interest. This is a 2-year fully funded position at the University of Copenhagen with a starting date being negotiable and optimally during the first quarter of 2024. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with Associate Professor Vasileios Gkinis and Associate Professor Bo Vinther.
Qualifications We invite applicants with a background in physics, biogeochemistry, glaciology or relevant engineering fields. Applicants must hold a PhD degree and have excellent communication skills (written, verbal) in English. Prior experience with laboratory techniques and instrumentation development will be considered advantageous. Additionally, candidates with experience in numerical methods, Python scripting as well as prototyping techniques like CAD, 3d printing and basic microcontroller electronics will be favored. Ideally, the successful candidate has a problem-solving, hands-on mindset and can work independently.
Responsibilities The focus of the postdoc researcher will be on the development, validation, and testing of the two systems under development. Documentation writing, compilation of measurement protocols and measurements on real ice core samples will also be part of the activities the postdoc will be involved in. We also expect the successful candidate to have active involvement in developing data analysis tools as well as signal analysis and signal reconstruction techniques to be applied on the acquired datasets. Presentation of the results in scientific conferences and Beyond EPICA related events as well as leading and participating in peer reviewed publications is also expected.
isoDEEPICE The position is part of the isoDEEPICE project funded by the Danish Research Foundation. The main goal of the project is to provide the ice core community with high-resolution, high-precision techniques tailored for the analysis of water isotope signals of the very old ice to be retrieved during the Beyond EPICA project. Minimizing sample consumption is one of the key elements of the analytical development during the project. In particular, the project aims at introducing innovative experimental approaches involving advanced sample preparation using femtosecond laser material processing as well as microfluidic devices for the handling of microquantities of liquid ice core samples.
Further information on the Department is linked at www. science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/ Inquiries about the position can be made to Bo Vinther, bvinther@nbi.ku.dk and Vasileios Gkinis, v.gkinis@nbi.ku.dk .
The position is open from 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Terms of employment The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below.
Please include:
Cover letter with a statement of interest
Curriculum Vitae
Diplomas and transcripts of Bsc and Msc and PhD studies
List of publications
Re/Preprints of up to 3 relevant publications
1-3 reference letters (if available)
The deadline for applications is 1 December 2023, 23:59 GMT +1 .
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee.
