About OzGrav

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) was established in 2017 to use the historic first detections of gravitational waves to understand the extreme physics of black holes and warped space time. These discoveries will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to make use of this new window on the universe.

The University of Queensland is one of eight Australian universities collaborating in OzGrav: The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne, Monash University, The University of Western Australia, The University of Adelaide, The University of Sydney, The University of Queensland, and several prestigious overseas research organisations including Caltech and MIT.

OzGrav was recently awarded $35M from the Australian Research Council to renew Centre operations for another seven years, through to 2031.

In addition to fundamental research, OzGrav pursues a vigorous outreach agenda that includes working with students from low socio-economic areas and encouraging the participation of minorities in science at all levels. OzGrav pursues research translation and commercialisation opportunities, generating opportunities for staff to experience secondments to industry during their postdoctoral terms.

OzGrav supports a dynamic and flexible team that works across the gravitational-wave spectrum, from nanohertz to kilohertz frequencies, on a range of problems in gravitational-wave astrophysics. Each postdoc has a generous travel budget and access to generous resources and technologies to facilitate OzGrav-wide large-scale projects. OzGrav is also home to the new $5.2M OzSTAR supercomputer, Ngarrgu Tindebeek, custom designed to support gravitational-wave astrophysics. OzGrav members also have the opportunity to be active participants in the LIGO-Virgo-Kagra Scientific Collaboration.

OzGrav is committed to cultivating a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusivity for all members, colleagues, and partners. We recognise that inequality historically and currently exists within the scientific community across the globe. Our goal is to continue to work on ensuring our members reflect the diversity of the community by breaking down barriers to enable all our members to be their full selves in the workplace. We believe that diversity of background, identity, approach, and thought enhances our ability to achieve a new wave of discovery, and we continually look for ways to make the Centre more inclusive.

Some of the current initiatives OzGrav has available to support our members are:

Carer Grant Scheme.

Flexible work arrangements and hours, such as hybrid working arrangements and part-time options available.

Ongoing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion training.

For more information on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at OzGrav, you can find our

EDI Action Plan here.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/ Research Fellow to work as part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav). The team at UQ will be focusing on testing fundamental physics with gravitational waves, potentially including (but not limited to) cosmological applications and gravitational wave theory. Applications from all areas of gravitational wave astrophysics will be considered.

Contribute to research related to gravitational waves and their use as astrophysical and cosmological probes.

Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing in high quality outlets.

Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

Work collaboratively with the wider OzGrav team across the nodes.

Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

Effectively lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle.

This is a research-focused academic position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to three years at Academic Level A or B, commensurate with the successful candidate's experience, skills and abilities. Part-time and/or flexible working arrangements may also be available within the requirements of the role.
