WHAT YOUR JOB WILL BE LIKE:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee interested in performing fundamental research and development in the field of polymer materials science. You will join a team of researchers and will be expected to lead at least one experimental program. Specifically, this program will involve the study of the mechanics of polymers at high deformation rates and the development of new polymer materials capable of resisting mechanical shock and impact. We use modern approaches in polymer chemistry and physics, such as polymerization-induced self-assembly, to develop materials that possess better final properties. We rely on a broad range of traditional characterization techniques familiar to polymer scientists – particularly thermomechanical analysis – but also at the forefront of materials science, such as gas gun shock experiments and laser interferometry. You will be expected to contribute and execute innovative research ideas, present your research at various internal and external forums, and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. You will also be provided the opportunity to seek funding for additional research topics with the guidance and support of your staff mentors. This postdoctoral position is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking to transition from their PhD research to a fast-paced environment in a National Lab setting that provides ample chances for both personal and professional enrichment.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE:

· Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related STEM field (The PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment)

· Experience in experimental research involving polymer science and/or shock physics

· Strong track record of productivity demonstrated through peer reviewed publications, patents, and presentations at technical conferences

· Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE:

· Experience in formulation of polymer thermosets

· Experience in polymer self-assembly and/or phase behavior

· Experience in polymer characterization, including typical techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, rheology, and thermomechanical testing

· Experience with high-speed diagnostic instrumentation such as laser interferometry (VISAR and/or PDV), streak and/or framing cameras, digitizers, x-ray diffraction, pyrometry, flash x-ray generators

· Experience with any of the following: shock physics, high pressure physics, high energy density physics, equations of state, or constitutive properties

· Experience with experiments using high-risk facilities such as high-voltage systems, laser diagnostics, x-ray sources, and gas guns

· Desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate students

· Strong work ethic and motivation to lead research programs

ABOUT OUR TEAM:

The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.

Our team is committed to nurturing environment compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce. In support of this vision, we actively recruit applicants from diverse groups of backgrounds and fosters an inclusive community. Join us and work towards your goals while making a difference!

POSTING DURATION:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
