The Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, (CBCD, www. cbcd.bbk.ac.uk), is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to lead work on a new Wellcome Trust-funded longitudinal study of sensory processing and responsivity in young children.
The key objective for this post is to lead the assessments of toddlers with varying levels of sensory responsivity. There will be multiple opportunities for training in cutting-edge neuroimaging (e.g., integrated fNIRS – VR) and statistical (e.g., structural equation modelling) methodologies, along with clinical assessment tools (e.g., sensory and mental health instruments).
The successful candidate will be encouraged to consider fellowship applications and will be supported to develop these by the PI if of interest. The project will use a range of methodologies, including EEG and novel integrated neuroimaging-virtual reality (VR) technology, to understand:
1) the neurocognitive drivers of individual differences in sensory responsivity
2) the impacts of individual differences in sensory responsivity on child development, including neurodevelopmental and mental health outcomes.
The project is directed by Dr Virginia Carter Leno and conducted with a group of international collaborators (e.g., Professor Emily Jones at the CBCD, UK, Professor Mark Johnson at the University of Cambridge, UK, Dr Carlijn van Boomen, Utrecht, The Netherlands, Dr John Herrington at University of Pennsylvania, USA).
The Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (CBCD) incorporates a group of researchers studying brain and psychological development in typically and atypically developing babies and toddlers using behavioural testing and brain imaging methods. https:// www. cbcd.bbk.ac.uk/
The Department of Psychological Sciences is a centre of vibrant research and teaching whose roots can be traced to the beginnings of the scientific study of Psychology in the UK over a century ago. In the two most recent Research Assessment Exercises (2008, 2016), the Department was ranked 5th in the UK for the excellence of its research.
Terms and Conditions
Fixed Term contract for 36 months (with the option to extend). Full time – 35 hours a week. Please submit an application form for consideration. Closing date: 31 January 2024. Interview date: w/c 19 February 2024. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Birkbeck's Positive Action policy will be considered for this role.
Remuneration
£42,365 rising to £48,424 per annum. The salary is on the College's London pay scale, which includes a consolidated weighting/allowance, which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area.
