Two postdoctoral positions are available in the Proteomics and Cell Signaling Group, Department of Proteomics at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen.
Background
The Department of Proteomics at the NNF Center for Protein Research is headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann, and the “Proteomics and Cell Signaling” group in the department is lead by Group Leader Dr. Chunaram Choudhary. By joining our team, you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers from EU, Asia, and USA. We use cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of posttranslational modifications, such as ubiquitylation, phosphorylation and acetylation (Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2010;11(6):427-39; Nat Cell Biol. 2012 (10):1089-98; Mol Cell. 2012;46(2):212-25; MCP 2011 (10):M111.013284; Sci. Signaling, 2011;4(183):ra48; Mol Cell. 2009;36(2):326-39; Science. 2009;325(5942):834-40; Mol Cell, 2013 Jul 25;51(2):265-72). Using these approaches we study cell signaling at “systems-level” in response to different perturbations (such as growth factor stimulation, chemical and genetic perturbations etc.). Furthermore, we use protein-protein interaction studies to identify their specific interaction partners. In addition to the state-of-the-art mass spectrometry infrastructure, the department is well equipped for performing follow-up studies using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques. The Center offers the latest technologies and expertise for genome-wide siRNA screens, CRISPR and TALEN-based genome editing, high-resolution microscopy, live cell imaging, and protein biophysical characterizations.

The duration of the positions is 2 years with a possible additional extension for one year.
Project Description
Our group has improved mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods for unbiased analysis of in vivo ubiquitylation (Nat Cell Biol. 2012;(10):1089-98; MCP. 2011;10(10):M111.013284), and acetylation sites (Science, 2009;325(5942):834-40; Sci. Signaling, 2011;4(183):ra48; Mol Cell, 2012, 46(2):212-25; Mol Cell, 2013 Jul 25;51(2):265-72). We are particularly interested in investigating regulatory signaling pathways, such as DNA damage signaling, or infection and immune receptor signaling. However, candidates interested in applying these technologies to study signaling beyond these processes and pathways are also encouraged to apply. The applicant will use the already established CRSPR-based genome editing methods and cutting-edge proteomics technologies to investigate the dynamics of PTMs (ubiquitylation/ acetylation/ phosphorylation) in genetically defined cell models. The candidate is also expected to apply various biochemical and molecular biology approaches for biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from these proteomic screens.
Tentative start date: January 2015, or later.
Qualifications
The candidate should have demonstrated excellent scientific productivity evidenced by high-quality research publications, be able to conduct independent and creative research, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.
The candidate is required to have PhD or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high-quality, peer reviewed international journal.
Knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be considered an advantage:
Cell signaling
genetics and cell biology
Genome integrity and chromatin biology
Innate immune receptor signaling
Signaling related to microbial infections
Bioinformatic analysis of large-scale proteomic datasets
Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential.
Good communication skills, both oral and written.
An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.
Place of employment and work
The employment is at the NNF Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at the Center. English is the working language at the Center.
Terms of salary and employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary is around 31,800 – 33,500 DKK per month (approximately 5,700-6,000 USD/month) plus 17.1 % in pension contribution.
