Postdoctoral Research Associate in Live Cell Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy (Fixed Term)

£28,695 to £37,394 per annum | East of England | 17 Nov 2014

The laboratory of Dr Sarah Bohndiek is a highly interactive and international research team focused on developing new imaging techniques to better understand the role of oxygen and oxidative stress in cancer. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the laboratory, which is co-located in the Department of Physics and the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute at the University of Cambridge. The laboratory is currently undergoing a significant expansion and we are seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual with experience in confocal microscopy and an interest in cancer drug resistance.

The research project will focus on conducting live cancer cell imaging experiments to understand the influence of antioxidant status on drug resistance. Key responsibilities will include management of our confocal Raman microscope and live cell imaging system. It is expected that the successful candidate will play a key role in establishing and maintaining collaborations with other researchers within the Physics department and industrial partners beyond. The development of independent research projects and student supervision will also be expected.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and demonstrate strong experimental skills in optical imaging including confocal microscopy. Meticulous attention to detail in experimental design and execution is required. They should have a proven track record of scientific publication and presentation at international research meetings. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, excellent communication and team working skills are essential, as is a strong interest in the underlying biological and clinical aspects of the work. Additional desirable attributes include experience with Raman spectroscopy measurements on biological tissue and mammalian cell culture (aseptic technique).

While the role will be based in the Department of Physics, the successful candidate will be expected to interact with members of the laboratory based at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute.
