Bio-Informatician Postdoctoral Cancer Researcher @ De Preter / TOBI-LAB

Employer

VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology

Location

Ghent

Closing date

Job Details

"Multi-modal analysis of nucleic acids from liquid biopsies for cancer monitoring” Description The Translational Onco-genomics and Bio-Informatics lab (TOBI-lab; tobi.ugent.be) at the VIB-UGent is actively seeking a postdoctoral bio-informatician to advance the liquid biopsy research in the team. An important aim in TOBI is the development of novel assays for diagnosis and monitoring cancer patients in a minimally invasive way through analysis of circulating molecules in blood and other biofluids. Bioinformatic pipeline development is an indispensable aspect of this research line. The candidate will focus on the development, optimization and application of multi-modal analysis strategies and pipelines for sequencing data generated on nucleic acids isolated from biofluids (genomics, epigenomics including fragmentomics, methylomics, etc). In addition, results will be compared and integrated with bulk and single-cell/spatial data obtained on matching tumor cells.

About TOBI-lab The overarching goal of the TOBI team is to enhance precision cancer management by developing innovative wet-lab and bioinformatic tools for diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive analysis. Prof. Katleen De Preter is the principal investigator of the TOBI-team (https://depreterlab.sites.vib.be/en), an internationally renowned cancer researcher, and a member of the Cancer Research Institute Ghent (CRIG: https://www.crig.ugent.be/en/prof-katleen-de-preter-phd). In 2022, an ERC consolidator grant was awarded to her to support the advancement of minimally-invasive assay for epigenetic tumor plasticity monitoring. The TOBI-lab is part of the VIB-UGent CMB (Center for Medical Biotechnology) and is affiliated with VIB.AI (Center for AI and computational biology).

About VIB-UGent CMB & VIB.AI The Center for Medical Biotechnology focuses on developing new and innovative molecular tools and technologies to address human health problems. The center translates its insights into widely applicable research tools, vaccines, diagnostics, and biopharmaceuticals. The research at CMB pushes the boundaries of biomolecular and bioinformatics research and engineering technologies.

VIB.AI studies fundamental problems in biology by combining machine learning with in-depth knowledge of biological processes.

Your tasks You will play a pivotal role in the development, validation and benchmarking of bio-informatic (Nextflow) pipelines for the multi-modal analysis of (epi-)genomic sequencing data generated on biofluids from cancer patients. You will develop novel strategies to integrate the different omics data layers. You will validate results by comparing the data generated on liquid biopsies with bulk/single-cell/spatial omics data generated on the tumors. You will benchmark methods with state-of-the-art approaches. You will be involved in setting up the wet-lab experiments for data generation within this project. You will co-supervise graduate and Ph.D. students who work on the research project. More generally, you will co-supervise and co-support the bio-informatic work performed by the team. You will oversee the bio-informatic pipelines developed by the team, including their adherence to the FAIR principles. You will interact with collaborating research teams within the VIB and the Cancer Research Institute Ghent (https://www.crig.ugent.be/en) and with international collaborating teams and VIB core facilities. You will also interact with the data core at VIB and the IT support team. What we are looking for You hold a PhD in bioinformatics (ideally obtained after the 1st of Oct 2022). You are an experienced user of Python, R and Nextflow. You have experience in pre-processing and processing large biomedical datasets, including bulk and single-cell (epi)genomics and transcriptomics data using high-performance computing. You have excellent written and oral English skills, as evidenced by prior peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. You are a talented researcher with strong motivation and high professional standards. You are ambitious and passionate about research. You can work autonomously while having strong team player skills. You are a fluent communicator. Experience in project writing and the successful achievement of grants is a plus. Experience in the supervision of graduate and Ph.D. students is a plus. You are motivated to apply for future competitive postdoc grants (e.g. FWO (fwo.be)) What we can offer you We offer you a contract for a term of 1 year, which may be extended by 1 year; Participation in an exciting and rapidly evolving new research area within a multidisciplinary environment; Become a member of a young, dynamic, and enthusiastic research team with great team spirit that operates at international level and is dedicated to improving the survival of cancer patients; Embedding within an environment that houses top research teams with a broad range of expertise, Access to state-of-the-art technology and core facilities in areas such as bulk, single-cell, and spatial (epi)genomics, transcriptomics, sequencing, bioinformatics/AI, imaging, etc; Access to VIB’s broad internal training, encompassing specialist training courses and training in transferable skills. A work environment that highly values employee well-being and fosters a vibrant social atmosphere. Starting date: As soon as possible; the position is immediately available. Interested? Interested candidates are invited to apply as soon as possible via the online system. Applications will be welcome until the position is filled.

Your application must include the following documents:

A cover letter, your CV

Your diploma with the required degree (if already in your possession). If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French, or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
