Technical University of Denmark

Do you wish to pursue your career as a materials and or chemist scientist, working closely with both academia and industry, developing interdisciplinary skills? DTU Engineering Technology at the Technical University of Denmark invites applicants for a 2-year postdoctoral position on the automated fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films funded by the The Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme.

The position is affiliated with the Section for Mechanical Technology and will be under the supervision of Associate Professor Jonas Sundberg. The project focuses on the design and build of a platform for automated preparation of MOF films on quartz resonators for chemical sensing. This includes the design, build and programming of automated fluidics systems to deliver chemical reagents and modulators using custom-built flow cells. Thus, you will be involved in both traditional chemical methodology as well as hardware development and automation. The position is in close synergy with another postdoc working on the same project, whose focus is on the development, demonstration and application of the functionalized quartz resonators integrated into a sensor prototype. If successful, it will contribute to environmentally responsible shutdown of oil & gas operations in the North Sea.

As part of the project, you will develop as a researcher and deepen your technical skills. Furthermore, you will also have the opportunity to build a network, collaborate and disseminate your research at national and international conferences. Our section is diverse in nationalities, personality types, and career paths. We enjoy collegial idea generation, feedback and cooperation in an informal and trustful working environment. The group actively promotes social activities to build a strong community network. Furthermore, we regularly enjoy social activities together outside of working hours.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The project aims to study the application of metal-organic thin films for the analyte recognition of methane in seawater phase. The project is based on previous results (see https://doi.org/10.1021/acsanm.4c06883), and will specifically look into how the preparation of the sensors can be automated for higher reproducibility and better performance. This will be achieved by developing an automated setup for the growth and deposition of quartz resonators, using open-source hardware and fluidics.

You are expected to:

Design and build an automated fluidics system for deposition of chemical reagents with in-situ monitoring of film deposition using quartz crystal microbalance.

Evaluate and understand how experimental conditions effect both the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the prepared films (e.g., using scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction.

Study their adsorptive response towards dissolved methane in water, with and without competing species, to establish sensitivity, response rate and cross-selectivity.

Support the implementation, testing and evaluation of the sensor prototype under simulated and real conditions.

Active dissemination of the results in scientific articles and participation in national and international conferences is integral to the job. Furthermore, participation in supervising B.Eng., B.Sc., and M.Sc. students is expected.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

More specifically, you are expected to have documented experience in one or more of the following:

Wet-lab chemistry methodology.

Metal-organic framework synthesis and characterisation (e.g., X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and elemental analysis).

Thin-film growth and surface characterisation (e.g., Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning, and atomic force microscopy).

Experience in programming for hardware control and data analysis, e.g. using Python, is a clear advantage.

The period of employment is two years. The expected starting date is 2025-09-01 (or according to mutual agreement). Further information may be obtained from Associate Professor Jonas Sundberg ([Please click the Apply button for the link or address]).
