Closing date

A postdoctoral IRTA position on pathogenesis and treatment of emerging viruses is available in the Emerging Pathogens Section within the Laboratory of Virology at the RML campus of NIAID in Hamilton, Montana. The laboratory studies the pathogenesis and treatment of critical illness due to Ebola virus, Marburg virus, Lassa virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and other emerging viruses.

The Emerging Pathogens Section, led by Daniel Chertow, MD, MPH, is interested in determining host and pathogen contributions to critical illness to improve clinical management of severe viral diseases. The laboratory uses a combined human natural history study and experimental laboratory approach to understand host-pathogen interactions longitudinally during illness in blood and tissue compartments. The aim of these studies is to identify host-targeted therapies that improve clinical outcome when initiated after the onset of critical illness, when many patients present for care. Fundamental experimental approaches of the laboratory include molecular-, cellular-, and immunological-based techniques along with animal models of pathogenesis and treatment. Studies are carried out in biosafety level (BSL) 2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories.

Successful applicants will be part of an interdisciplinary team focused on understanding the cellular and molecular determinants of organ injury and dysfunction due to high consequence emerging viral pathogens. Candidates are expected to study the underlying immunological and molecular determinants of critical illness due to known and emerging zoonotic and human infections including filoviruses, arenaviruses, henipaviruses, and coronaviruses to identify and test putative host-targeted therapies.

An overview of the Emerging Pathogens Section’s most recent research with regards to pathogenesis of critical illness due to severe infection includes:

Klebsiella pneumoniae induces dose-dependent shock, organ dysfunction, and coagulopathy in a nonhuman primate critical care model. mBio 2025, DOI: 10.1128/mbio.01943-24.

Fostamatinib inhibits neutrophil extracellular traps induced by COVID-19 patient plasma: A potential therapeutic. J Infect Dis 2021, DOI: 10.1093/infdis/jiaa789.

Requirements

Highly motivated candidates who have a strong background in molecular biology, immunology, translational research, and infectious diseases animal modeling are encouraged to apply. Experience working in high biological containment laboratories (BSL-3 or BSL-4) and experience in emerging infectious disease would be considered an advantage.

Well-developed oral and written communication skills are essential. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in virology, molecular biology, immunology, or another appropriate discipline and have less than 3 years of postdoctoral experience. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Trainees will receive health insurance as well as a competitive stipend commensurate with experience.

To Apply

Applicants should send their curriculum vitae (CV), a letter expressing career goals and interests, and three letters of reference with contact information to Kimberly Meade-White, Scientific Operations Specialist, Laboratory of Virology, Rocky Mountain Laboratories by email kmeade-white@niaid.nih.gov (406-363-9362 (phone)).

RML is a NIAID Campus with excellent genomic, electron microscopic, and veterinary core support that enables scientists to completely focus on their research. Located in the scenic Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, RML is surrounded by some of the best hiking, skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and trout fishing in North America.
