We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow in computational biology at the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics, Lund University. The project will focus on connecting gene expression with alterations in soil organic matter. Specifically, the applicant will develop methods for finding links between differential gene expression, as determined by next generation sequencing, with changes in the chemical composition of soil, as measured with IR spectroscopy. The experimental partners will generate large amounts of high-dimensional data, including spatial dimensions. The applicant will need to select, apply and refine suitable methods from statistics and machine learning, in order to construct models that may aid the formulation of hypotheses about the underlying biochemical mechanisms governing changes in the chemical composition of the soil. The project will be conducted in close collaborations with microbial ecologists, soil scientists and geochemists in the research team. The postdoctoral funding is granted for a period of two years.
You will be member of Dr. Carl Troein’s group and be part of the larger multidisciplinary research program “Molecular Interactions Controlling soil Carbon Sequestration – MICCS”. The overall goal of this program is to gain a mechanistic understanding of the interactions between soil organic matter (SOM), the activity of decomposing microorganisms and the physicochemical environment that control the stability of SOM. The MICCS research environment consists of a strong team of scientists, research technicians, postdocs and PhD students studying these interactions at different complexity and spatial scales – from defined model systems to field sites – using cutting-edge technology ranging from spectroscopic analysis to transcriptome profiling, isotope labelling, and systems biology methods. We are presently recruiting 4 postdoctoral fellows and 6 PhD students to the research program. The cross-disciplinary environment will provide the candidate with ample possibilities to learn novel skills and methods.
