Applications are invited from post-doctoral scientists to investigate the mechanisms of cellular actin filament assembly, and their manipulation by invading bacteria like Salmonella. There are currently two positions funded for 5 years by a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award to Prof. Vassilis Koronakis.

The laboratory is well-funded and located the Department of Pathology in central Cambridge. The laboratory has established powerful biochemical membrane reconstitution and cell biology approaches to resolve processes by which cellular signal transduction cascades lead to the formation of actin structures at the host cell membrane. We will exploit these to resolve how virulence effector proteins modulate small-GTPase networks at the membrane to drive bacterial invasion (see our recent work below).

 

Humphreys et al (2013) Arf6 coordinates actin assembly through the WAVE complex, a mechanism usurped by Salmonella to invade host cells. PNAS 110:16880-85

 

Humphreys et al (2012) Salmonella SopE and host GEF ARNO cooperate to recruit and activate WAVE to trigger bacterial invasion. Cell Host Microbe 11:129-139

 

Koronakis et al. (2011) WAVE regulatory complex activation by cooperating GTPases Arf and Rac1. PNAS 108:14449-54

 

Applicants should have a PhD and experience in biochemistry and/or cell biology.
