Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Anopheles Genetics

Grade 7: £30,434- £37,394 with a discretionary range to £40,847 p.a.

The MalariaGEN Anopheles genetic crosses project provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in analyses of high throughput Illumina sequence data from over 400 individual mosquitoes derived from a series of experimental crosses, analogous to pedigrees in human genetics. These data provide a unique resource to study genetic variation of these highly competent vectors of human malaria in Africa. Anopheles mosquitoes are known to harbour extremely high levels of genetic diversity, more than an order of magnitude greater than human populations, with many unique features such as large polymorphic inversions not found in humans, and thus Anopheles genome variation is an extremely rich and relatively unexplored area of genome biology with direct public health relevance.

This role covers working from the analysis of sequence data quality and genome accessibility, exploration and evaluation of methods for calling SNPs and other classes of polymorphism, methods for haplotype estimation, producing high quality data on genome and haplotype variation, and the analyses of those data to generate new insights into the mutation and recombination processes that shape Anopheles genomes. The publication of high quality data resources in addition to scientific papers is an important component of this role.

You will have a PhD in a subject with a substantial quantitative component in a relevant subject such as malaria biology or genome variation, previous experience in processing and analysis of working with large scale genomic data, e.g. next generation sequencing data, as well as prior training in Statistics and Bioinformatics.

This post is fixed-term for 1 year in the first instance and funded by the Wellcome Trust.
