The Grünwald lab is looking for talented scientists to ignite our research program. Current projects include the nucleation and growth of complex multi-component systems, the polymer-mediated self-assembly of porous nanomaterials, and structural transformations of nanocrystals undergoing ion-exchange.

The ideal candidate has a PhD in Chemistry or Physics (or a related field), a deep knowledge of statistical mechanics and molecular simulation techniques, and an excellent record of published work. Most importantly, we are looking for curious, creative, and enthusiastic people with a high level of motivation and persistence.

What principles govern the self-assembly of nanoparticles into complex patterns? How can driving forces and interactions between particles be manipulated to give a desired nano-material? How do the processes work that determine the microscopic structure of nanoparticles, and how can they be influenced? These are the questions that our research tries to answer. We address these questions with a broad range of computational tools and statistical mechanics, including molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation, and rare-events sampling techniques. By keeping close ties with experimental labs at the University of Utah and around the globe, we aim to make predictions that guide the development of new nanomaterials.

The Chemistry Department at the University of Utah provides an inspiring and collaborative work environment. Salt Lake City has high quality of living at moderate cost, and has a surprisingly vibrant arts and culture scene. Above all, it offers immediate access to the spectacular outdoors of the Rocky Mountains, with fantastic hiking, biking, skiing, etc. A few hours away, there are some of the country’s most breathtaking National Parks, including Yellowstone, Bryce, Zion, and Arches.
