Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellow position in the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Disease at the University of Michigan Medical School, in the laboratory of Marc Hershenson, M.D.

The Hershenson laboratory studies the role of rhinovirus, the common cold virus, in the exacerbation and development of asthma.  Asthma is the most common chronic disease in the U.S, and the most common cause of hospital admission in children.  Viral infections, in particular with rhinovirus, are the most frequent triggers of asthma attacks.  In addition, it is possible that, early-life rhinovirus infections, in combination with other factors such as genetic background and microbiome, actually cause the development of asthma in children.

This research is relevant not only to asthma but also other airways diseases including chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD, the third leading cause of death in the U.S.) and cystic fibrosis.

The Hershenson lab employs a broad scientific approach, studying cell culture models, mouse models and human subjects.  The successful candidate will work closely with the PI in study design, data interpretation, presentations and manuscript preparation.
