Postdoctoral Scientist : Heidelberg, Germany
The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2,700 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
The Division of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology is seeking a
Postdoctoral Scientist
(Ref.-No. 161/2015)
Description:
The division "Pediatric Neuro-Oncology" (Head: Prof. Stefan Pfister) at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg studies pediatric brain tumors using high-throughput genomic and epigenomic profiling with the aim to translate molecular findings into clinical practice. This is desperately needed from a clinical perspective, since brain tumors have become the number one cause of cancer related mortality of children. Over the years our division has generated a large amount of high-throughput genomic data of several pediatric brain tumors (glioblastoma, medulloblastoma, ependymoma, pilocytic astrocytoma, ATRTs, PNETs). Tumors have been analyzed by whole genome DNA and RNA sequencing, DNA methylation, and gene expression profiling. This has led to the identification of multiple molecular subtypes that are not only biologically but also clinically very different. Identification of these molecular subtypes may lead to new treatment strategies, but for that we have to understand better the genes, pathways and processes that are dysregulated in these tumors and how they can be targeted.
For the working group of Dr. Marcel Kool we are now searching for a postdoctoral scientist to join our team and to work on a project that has the aim to functionally validate genes that were identified from the comprehensive genomic analyses of ATRTs and PNETs and to investigate their role in tumorigenesis. To study this, appropriate cell line and mouse models need to be generated using induced pluripotent stem cell and CRIPR/Cas9 technologies and/or lentiviral gene and shRNA transfer, followed by extensive phenotypic and high-throughput molecular characterizations of these model systems. Results from these studies may help to understand these devastating tumors in a better way and may lead to new and better therapeutic strategies.
Your profile:
The successful candidate is a highly motivated, ambitious, hard-working individual with excellent grades who enjoys working in an international team and is passionate about making a difference through cancer research. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related field and have a track record of excellent first-author publications. The ideal candidate has expertise in molecular and cellular biology, with specific focus on the techniques described above, is highly self-motivated, and able to pursue research projects independently. People with experiences of stem cell biology and/or animal studies would be encouraged to apply. Experience in the bioinformatic analyses of genomic data is advantageous. Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English are mandatory. Applications should include a CV, cover letter, certificates, expected availability date, a complete list of publications, and 2-3 references.
The position is limited for 2 years.
The position can in principle be part-time.
For further information please contact Dr. Marcel Kool, phone 06221 42-4636.
The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
