Department Description 
The Applied Photonic Microsystems Department develops and matures state of the art photonic technologies for a variety of national security purposes. Our team of interdisciplinary researchers innovates, develops, and applies novel technologies including silicon photonics, nanophotonics, optomechanics, integrated quantum optics and optical systems, metamaterials, plasmonics, optical detectors, guided wave optics, and biophotonics.

Job Summary

We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to contribute in on-going research in Silicon photonics, nanophotonics, nano-opto-mechanics, quantum optics, and nonlinear optics, including optical interconnect, optical emitters and detectors, optical-forces in nano-optomechanical waveguide and cavity system, integrated quantum optical systems, plasmonic and phononic devices, and other optical technologies.

Minimum Qualifications 
- PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineer or Science, Physics, or other related technical areas conferred within one to five years prior to employment
- Experience in the design and test of optical systems, optical materials or devices, or photonics microsystems.
— Experience in developing or using software for device performance simulations using, for example, Comsol, Matlab/Simulink, FDTD codes etc.
—Ability to perform original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publications in top-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in high speed characterization of devices, electrical probe stations, operation of high speed and high frequency test equipment, such as bit error rate test equipment, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and high speed oscilloscopes.
- Expertise in nonlinear optics, integrated photonics, optomechanics or a similar topics.
- Experience with nonlinear optical measurement techniques and basic theories for treatment of nonlinear phenomena.
- Experience in near IR optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors and spectroscopies.
- Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and materials (for example: optical waveguides, modulators, plasmonics, fibers or photonic/phononic bandgap materials) with commercial and custom codes.
- Familiarity with laboratory optical bench optics, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers, able to design and carry out laser-based optical experiments.
- Self-motivated, with strong communication skills to work independently and in a team environment
- Graduate/undergraduate GPA > 3.5/3.2 respectively.
Familiarity with the following:
- Nonlinear processes such as four-wave mixing, two-photon absorption and stimulated Brillouin scattering.
- Physics of waveguides, photonic crystals or phononic crystals, plasmonic devices.
- Optical microfabrication processes and techniques.
- Solid state physics and phenomena and physical optics.
- Quantum information technologies

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
