Research Associate: Correlating image heterogeneity with tumour genomics

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on correlating image heterogeneity with tumour genomics jointly in the labs of Carlos Caldas and Florian Markowetz. This project extends the continuous, successful collaboration between the Caldas and Markowetz labs.

The postdoc will analyse ~100 breast tumors, for which we have data on two time points (before and after treatment), by integrating three sources of information: (1) radiological imaging, (2) histopathological H&E images, (3) genomic profiles (DNA copy number and gene expression).

We will address the following questions:

How tissue heterogeneity visible in radiological and pathological images vary between molecular subtypes of breast cancer?

How can the three data types be integrated to define homogenous subtypes of breast cancer that are predictive of outcome?

How do the tissue and the genomic profiles change during treatment?

Methods: To describe tumor tissue and its heterogeneity we will extend the image analysis methods developed in Yuan et al (2012) and Ali et al (2013) for H&E slides and combine them with analyses of radiological images based on Minkowski functionals (Canuto et al, 2009).

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a quantitative field like mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, bioinformatics, or computer science. The applicant should have a good biological background and excellent computing skills. Prior experience in image analysis is desired. The atmosphere at CI is very collaborative and interactive; good communication skills are key.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
