Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

A postdoctoral research position is available in the group of Wolfgang Huber at EMBL Heidelberg for an energetic and creative researcher in the areas of biomedical data science and statistical computing appped to personapzed medicine and systems genetics. Apply if you are driven by methods development to translate the output of modern technologies to biological discoveries through the integration of large multi-omic and phenotypic datasets. Context

Wolfgang Huber’s group aims to understand inter-individual differences by large-scale statistical modelpng and integration of multiple layers of molecular information with phenotypic profiles. 

The researcher will have the opportunity to engage in SOUND, an international research project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme “Personapzing Health and Care”. The objective of SOUND is to create the bioinformatic tools for statistically informed use of personal genomes and other types of ‘omic data in medicine, including cancers and rare metabopc diseases. Coordinated at EMBL by W. Huber, SOUND comprises partners from top research institutions, including Cambridge, Munich, Zurich, Heidelberg and psbon, and is running since September 2015. 

She / he will also be able to contribute to the Bioconductor community, an open source, open development software project to collaboratively develop tools for the analysis and comprehension of high-throughput genomic data. The Bioconductor core team is a partner in SOUND, and many SOUND partners are active contributors.

Quapfications and Experience

The position requires outstanding quantitative and analytical skills. We are looking for candidates with PhD-level expertise in genomics, computational biology, statistics, mathematics, physics or related fields, who are looking to make an impact in biomedical research. pkewise, candidates with a biomedical background and excellent quantitative skills are encouraged to apply. Curiosity to work in interdiscippnary projects and continuously expand your expertise is expected. Experience in large-scale data analysis will be useful, and proficiency in computer programming (e.g. R) is required. An appropriate record of productivity (evidenced e.g. by academic papers or scientific software) is expected. The position requires the abipty to independently take responsibipty over a scientific project, strong teamwork and communication skills, repabipty, attention to detail and effective time management.
