The preeminent scientific challenge of the 21st Century is to understand and quantify Earth’s current and future climate. The North Atlantic subpolar ocean is a potentially climate critical region that is closely coupled to the atmosphere, with strong dynamical connections to Europe, the tropical regions and to decadal climate variability. SAMS has a leading role in developing sustained observing programmes in the subpolar Atlantic, and is a partner in the International Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Programme (OSNAP). OSNAP will deploy (Phase 1: 2014-2019) a purposeful array of moorings, gliders and floats from Newfoundland to Scotland via Greenland to expand the Atlantic meridional overturning observing system. UK-OSNAP aims to generate new knowledge and understanding of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre and its wider impacts on climate. This will entail activities in ocean measurement, modelling of the ocean and climate, and the analysis of results, requiring significant skills in all these fields.

The purpose of this job is to support the physical oceanographic observations being made as part of UK-OSNAP and to undertake scientific research with those observations in collaboration with national and international partners.

The main duties of this post are: 1. To plan and execute the UK mooring and glider programme; 2. Reduce raw mooring and glider data to research data conforming to world leading standards; 3. Lead and publish 3*/4* research with a focus on analyses of data obtained during current and historical field programmes, focussing on basin-scale oceanography and climate problems in the subpolar North Atlantic; 4. Develop appropriate national and international collaborations for scientific research and; 5. Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate supervision. This post has a focus on scientific research, but also requires an independent and practical scientist to help lead the field programme.
