The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington (UW) has received a generous gift from the Washington Research Foundation (WRF) to launch the WRF Innovation Fellows Program at the Institute for Protein Design, supporting research partnerships between the IPD and other Seattle-area research institutes or UW departments. 

We are recruiting exceptionally talented researchers who have recently finished their PhD to join expert laboratories at Seattle area institutions where they will apply protein design methods to current health, energy, and materials related research problems. 

Candidate fellows must identify a Seattle-based research laboratory in their area of interest, and are expected to spend most of their time in these laboratories while at the same time becoming expert at protein design methodology at the IPD.  Prospective fellows may choose from a list of projects proposed by Seattle area faculty (http://www.ipd.uw.edu/wrf-ipd-research-areas/), or propose a new project; in the latter case the fellow must identify one or more suitable host laboratories.

WRF Innovation Fellows are provided a salary based on experience and qualifications, benefits, $10,000 in protein production core lab support per year, and a research stipend of $25,000 per year that can be used for supplies, travel, equipment, and other research costs. 

Qualifications: WRF Innovation Fellows must have an outstanding scientific record, and must have received their PhD degree by the time they begin their fellowship appointment.

Evaluation criteria for the candidate Fellows are:

The Fellow's record of research and other accomplishments.

The quality of the proposed research plan and relevance to the goal of promoting applications of protein design methodology.

About the IPD: The exquisite functions of naturally occurring proteins beautifully solve the challenges faced during evolution, but we face new challenges today.  The goal of the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington is to develop and apply methods for designing a whole new world of synthetic proteins to address these new challenges in the areas of medicine, energy and technology.

The IPD is headed by Dr. David Baker, and is fortunate to be situated in Seattle with a wealth of expertise in healthcare, medicine, computer science, materials science and engineering both at the UW and at the many Seattle-based independent research institutes.
