We invite applications from outstanding scientists to fill a postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom. You will use the Microscope and Ion Accelerator for Materials Investigations (MIAMI) facility to explore radiation damage in nanoporous nuclear materials on a project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). MIAMI is a unique facility providing excellent opportunities for high-impact research and collaboration with other leading research groups worldwide. This project is a collaboration with modellers at the University of Surrey led by Prof Roger Webb and you will be closely involved with bringing together the experimental and computational aspects of this research.

Responsibilities will include the design and execution of complex irradiation experiments, analysis of results and preparation of publications. You will also be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences to disseminate your research to the scientific community.

You must have a PhD in a relevant field and a publication record commensurate with your stage of career. You should also have good experience in one or more of the following:

Transmission electron microscopy

Radiation damage in materials

Structural nuclear materials

You will join the Electron Microscopy and Materials Analysis (EMMA) research group which has been highly successful in attracting research funding including £3.5M for a new MIAMI-2 facility to be installed at the University of Huddersfield. MIAMI-2 will be based a brand new 300 kV transmission electron microscope interfaced with dual ion-beams and featuring electron energy loss and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopies, a 16 megapixel camera and a wide selection of sample holders for performing in situ experiments. This new facility will be built in Spring 2016 providing the opportunity for the successful applicant to be involved in the establishment of this state-of-the-art instrument as well as having it available for their research.
