The Astrophysics Group of the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Galaxy Evolution Research Team of Professor Maiolino.

Among other activities, the team is involved in the analysis of infrared, millimetre and submillimetre spectroscopic data of very high redshift galaxies with the goal of constraining the physical properties of primeval galaxies and primeval accreting supermassive black holes.

The post holder will be expected to conduct independent research programmes and to participate actively in the reduction, analysis and interpretation of deep millimetre, submillimetre and near-IR infrared integral field spectroscopic data of galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei at high redshift. These data will not only be used to characterise the physical processes in these primordial objects, but also to select and identify targets for observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and to optimise the associated observing strategy. The post holder will also be involved in simulations that will be used for planning the JWST observations.

The successful candidate will hold or be close to obtaining a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy or another relevant scientific discipline. They should have a proven track record in research in the areas mentioned above. The post holder must be an expert in the reduction and analysis of near-IR integral field spectroscopic data, as well as in the reduction and analysis of millimetre/submillimetre spectroscopic data from interferometers, and from ALMA in particular. The post holder should also be familiar with the interpretation of near-IR and millimetre spectroscopic data of high redshift galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei

Expertise in Python and IDL code writing are also desirable attributes.
