Post-doctoral Researcher : Zurich, Switzerland

The new National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) "Digital Fabrication" examines innovative engineering and construction in architecture. The focus of this initiative is the research of digital design and manufacturing processes and their synthesis in novel technologies. With a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, different areas such as architecture, structural engineering, computer science, control systems engineering, material engineering and robotics are brought together in an ambitious partnership, with the goal of establishing digital technology as an essential part of future architecture.

Post-doctoral Researcher

Research Activities:

This post-doc position will have the lead over the subproject “Bespoke Prefabrication” which has the prospect of exploiting mass customisation; digitally driven prefabrication systems that combine the flexibility of individually fabricated, highly customised building parts and just-in-time assembly with the advantages of mass production – without any need for repetition, at low cost and with a constant and controllable quality. The types of prefabrication technologies explored in this subproject revolve around state-of-the-art construction principles, as well as research activities that relate to bespoke prefabrication systems, that is: the subtractive fabrication of modules; the spatial forming of materials; and the assembly of complex spatial structures with simple elements. Such a shift towards bespoke full-scale construction components also includes the exploration of advanced machine operations, such as real-time production sequences and simulation, resource utilization and productivity solutions, minimum time for making that complies with resource constraints, as well as human-machine 
cooperation.

Responsibilities will be divided between research with the BLOCK Research Group within the NCCR context, and assisting and managing three ambitious and very hands-on PhD research projects of three different PIs to be held in the new Robotic Fabrication Laboratory at ETH Zurich: “Spatial forming of structural timber fabric” with Prof. Dr. Yves Weinand (EPFL), “Large-scale robotic wirecutting pre-fabrication” with Prof. Dr. Philippe Block (ETHZ), and “Design and robotic assembly of complex metal structures” with Profs. Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler (ETHZ).

Your Profile:

- We are looking for a computational architect with excellent geometrical and constructional insights and interests in structures, with strong programming skills and strong experience in digital fabrication.


- Candidates should be ambitious, dynamic, and able and willing to collaborate in and lead highly inter-disciplinary teams, as the project will have an important collaborative component.


- Good written and oral communication skills are required. – Prior experience in project and team management, and multi-disciplinary collaboration, as well as demonstrated organisational skills are desirable.


- Knowledge of a high-level (OOP) programming language (preferably Python) and professional 3D modelling (preferably in Rhinoceros) are needed. Experience in digital fabrication and/or robotic and CNC/CAM systems is necessary, as the project will be focussed on large-scale demonstrators.


- Note that this position requires a person who has completed her/his doctoral studies before the start of employment.
