Department Description

Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, with locations in Livermore and Emeryville, California, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are a highly interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. The department is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology), chemistry (analytical, physical and biochemistry), material science and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering). We address problems with strong ties to national security, including biodefense and health security, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. We have a strong track record of adapting microfluidic technology for chemical and biological analyses. We also actively develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effective biofuels on a commercial scale. Our bioenergy work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI).

The mission of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is to provide the basic science and technology to enable a bio-based economy. To this end, JBEI develops world-class research in leading-edge topics such as synthetic and systems biology, genomic sequence analysis, and microfluidics. JBEI is a world-renowned research institute led by researchers from 7 internationally recognized scientific partner institutions: Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Carnegie Institute for Science, the University of California-Berkeley, and the University of California-Davis.

Job Description

The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to join a multi-disciplinary research team involving analytical chemists, physical chemists, engineers and biologists working to apply microfluidics to single cell analyses relevant to environmental microbiology research. The work will involve the development and adaptation of integrated microfluidic devices for single cell analysis to enable screening of bacterial communities, and ultimately single cell/DNA sequencing. The research will involve work with lab-on-a-chip techniques, microfabrication, cell culture, next-generation sequencing, and adapting molecular biology assays to microfluidic formats.

Minimum Qualifications

Recent Ph.D. in engineering (eg. bio or biomedical), chemistry (eg. bioanalytical), or a related discipline is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated hands-on skills with microfluidics-enabled biological analysis. Experience in one or more of the following areas is required: next-generation sequencing, genomic and/or transcriptomic analyses, cell culture, PCR or other hybridization based assays, mass spectrometry and other detection methods. A strong record of high technical achievement as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is also required.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of microbial ecology (environmental microbiology), droplet or digital microfluidics, and microfabrication is also desired.

Security Clearance

No clearance required.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require aDOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
