To Study The Regulation Of Genome Duplication During Mammalian Development And Its Relevance To Cancer Therapy

Our research centers on the relationship between cancer cells, stem cells, and mammalian development. Our current research has two goals.

• Selectively kill cancer cells by targeting genes essential for preventing unrestricted DNA replication (DNA re-replication, endoreplication, mitotic slippage) in cancer cells. This objective is based on our identification of genes that are essential to prevent cancer cells from over replicating their genome during cell division, but that are not essential in normal cells.

• Determine the mechanism of action and therapeutic potential of a novel family of highly effective small molecules that induce autophagy. Induction of autophagy is an effective therapy for clearing the protein aggregates that form in the cells of patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.

• Projects include identifying gene targets with therapeutic potential, isolating and characterizing stem cells from specific cancers, exploring the mechanism of action of these autophagic inducers, and utilizing mouse models to evaluate therapeutic potential of gene targets and drugs.
