The position:

CSIRO Energy has established the National Solar Energy Centre (NSEC) in Newcastle to conduct world class research and development in solar processes, components and photovoltaics. Our Solar Energy Systems Group now welcomes a self-motivated and innovative Postdoctoral Fellow from a physics, physical chemistry, or engineering background wanting to join an exciting, interdisciplinary team in the priority areas of Photovoltaics Measurement and Next Generation Thin-film Photovoltaics.

Specific duties will include:

• Plan and carry out research that contributes and expands on existing thin-film photovoltaic research within the Solar Energy Systems Group.

• Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research in photovoltaics measurement.

• Understand and extend existing photovoltaic measurement procedures and standards, particularly as they relate to new and emerging thin-film photovoltaic technologies.

• Research and develop new measurement and characterisation methods for the fundamental understanding of photovoltaic function as it applies to cell and module performance.

• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.

• Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

• Prepare appropriate conference papers and present those at conferences as agreed with your supervisor.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues within your group, the business unit and across CSIRO.

Location: Newcastle, New South Wales

Salary: AU$78k to AU$88k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will have a PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Physics, Physical Chemistry or Engineering relevant to Photovoltaics.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have submitted your PhD prior to commencing. You must also have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.

You will also have:

• Detailed fundamental knowledge of physical chemistry and solid-state physics as it relates to photovoltaic function;

• High level of expertise in fundamental photovoltaics, such as device measurement, effects of temperature, spectrum and parasitic resistance on solar cell behaviour or semiconductor and P-N junction theory;

• Demonstrated experience in laboratory evaluation of perovskite solar cells, cell efficiency determination and/or the measurement of thin-film photovoltaic cells or equivalent non-professional experience.

• Knowledge of the essential and practical requirements for characterisation of solar cells and devices in a photovoltaic measurement laboratory of international or accredited standard.

• High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research group effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences, as well as a record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals.

• The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.

Demonstrated knowledge of the optical physics related to photovoltaic component materials and device function; experience in the operation and management of a photovoltaic measurement laboratory of international or accredited standard or equivalent non-professional experience; and experience in laboratory evaluation of perovskite solar cells, cell efficiency determination and/or the measurement of thin-film photovoltaic cells will be desirable.
