Department Description:
Department 1353 is a multidisciplinary research and development group supporting NNSA Defense and Work for Other (WFO) Programs. Our capabilities include experimental electromagnetics, the design and manufacturing of advanced power electronics, compact high current drivers, electron beam accelerators, x-ray sources, development and analysis of advanced materials and components, and plasma physics. Department 1353 employs a comprehensive research approach that includes analysis, simulation, and hardware verification.

Job Summary:
The Electrical Sciences and Experiments department is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support development and testing of advanced systems and components, with a specific focus on power electronics based power conversion systems for stationary on-grid or off-grid energy storage applications and other distributed energy resources such as PV inverters and wind turbine power electronics. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Creation and development of advanced technologies for Pulsed Power and power electronic based systems * Assurance of safe and secure operations consistent with ES&H and security * Work within a dynamic team environment as well as in a leadership role The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.
Required:
* PhD in Pulsed Power, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or related field * Demonstrated research experience in an area relevant to power electronic systems * General knowledge by way of training or experience in the following areas: switch-mode power supplies such as voltage source converters, current source converters, and multi-level converters; ability to model these converters in electric utility steady-state and dynamic simulation; electric utility disturbances such as voltage dips, oscillations, harmonics, etc and their effects; and power electronic circuits and components * Experience or training in basic open and closed-loop control methods such as pulse width modulation and space vector modulation; ability to generate control software code and to program microcontrollers * Experience or training in circuit board design for power electronics applications such as gate driver and power stage circuits * Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
Desired:
* Experience and familiarity with ultra-wide band gap devices * General familiarity with motors such as induction motor and synchronous motor technology and their steady-state and dynamic/transient electrical models; ability to model these types of systems in steady-state and dynamic electric utility applications * Familiarity of thermal management or heat-transfer means for power electronic systems * Understanding of power electronic hardware fabrication and testing * Willingness to take on new challenges in subsystem and system design * Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals and reports * Advanced analytical, research and problem solving skills * Ability to support complex laboratory experiments * High voltage electrical safety training or willingness to complete training * Experience in Pulsed Power systems or a willingness to learn * Ability to work effectively in a team * PhD in Electrical Engineering with focus on Power Electronics * Demonstrated research in an area relevant to Pulsed Power * Demonstrated research in an area relevant to microgrid (military or civilian) design, control, and testing * Demonstrated ability to create and develop advanced technologies * Knowledge of electric energy storage technologies such as batteries, flywheels, electrochemical capacitors, etc. * Experience in materials research * Knowledge with electrical simulations tools (e.g. Matlab, SimPowerSystems, PSCAD, PSSE, and PSPICE) for steady-state and dynamic simulation of common electric utility disturbances * Practical knowledge in the areas of transmission planning and operation as applied to energy markets * Familiarity with power system planning tools such as PSLF/PSDS, PSS/E or equivalent * Strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution and mentoring skills.
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
