Postdoctoral Researcher

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Prof Martin Howard at the John Innes Centre, UK.

The aim of the project is to mechanistically dissect how digital (ON/OFF) and analogue (continuously varying) transcriptional regulation can co-exist at a single gene. Digital regulation is a hallmark of an epigenetic state, which allows maintenance of an expression state even in the absence of the originating signals. Such memory can be stored locally in the chromatin of target genes via histone modifications. However, some epigenetically regulated genes have a second mode with analogue continuously varying output.

The post holder will develop general mathematical models of histone modification dynamics capable of dual regulation, distinguishing between models where regulation is switched from one form to the other from cases where both co-exist simultaneously. Ideas from the modelling will be tested experimentally by collaborators with results iteratively fed back to the modelling. Findings from the project will significantly advance our understanding of genetic and epigenetic regulation, and how the two fit together. Other research projects may potentially also be available, and can to an extent be tailored to suit the interests and experience of the successful applicant.

The post holder will have, or expect to soon receive, a PhD in Theoretical Physics, Biological Physics, Biomathematics or related subject. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative individual, who can work independently to contribute new ideas. Prior experience in modelling biological systems is desirable but not essential. However, we do expect the post holder to enthusiastically seek new challenges in quantitative biology. The successful candidate must be available to travel to international meetings and for short visits to collaborating laboratories abroad.

Salary on appointment will be within the range £30,500 to £37,500 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 36 months.
