Department Description:
The Structural Dynamics and Radiography/NDE Department (01522) is part of the Engineering Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. Our center is the steward of engineering mechanics for Sandia and we are dedicated to solving our customer’s most pressing and important national security problems. Our department specializes in experimental technologies related to structural dynamics and non-destructive evaluation. With our state of the art experimental technologies, technical expertise, and analytical capabilities in sister departments, we provide integrated customer solutions in the following areas: development and application of state-of-the-art radiographic and acoustic diagnostics, structural dynamics testing including modal analysis and vibration characterization, and design expertise for fixturing and development of experimental configurations. Our mission is to support fundamental research, development, model validation, qualification and acceptance for nuclear weapons, satellites, national missile defense, and other applications.
Job Summary:
The Modal Lab is looking for a highly motivated and productive individual to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment with a focus on structural dynamics experimental research. This is a growth opportunity to help strengthen our structural dynamics research program with particular emphasis on nonlinear system ID, non-contact diagnostics, dynamics similarity, and substructuring. The individual's work portfolio would be expected to cover a full spectrum of work spanning the entire research
- development
- applications domain. There are significant opportunities to team with in-house high-fidelity multi-physics computational teams and large-scale test systems. * Position will be for one-year period with the option to serve no more than five additional one-year periods at the discretion of the manager. * The PhD must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment.
Required:
* Ph.D. in mechanical, aerospace or relevant field with a strong academic record (GPA of 3.2/4.0 or higher for undergraduate work and GPA of 3.5/4.0 or higher for graduate work) * Experience or academic focus in the area of structural dynamics, mechanical vibrations, or modal analysis * Laboratory experience (e.g. use of vibration shakers, accelerometers, data acquisition systems, and laser Doppler velocimetry) * Able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-Level security clearance
Desired:
* An undergradute in science, technology, engineering or science (STEM) with GPA of 3.5/4.0 or better and graduate degree(s) in STEM with GPA of 3.7/4.0 or better is preferred * Candidate should be able to work independently, with the ability to integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment * This individual must demonstrate strong interpersonal, organization, and communication skills (both oral and written), as evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record * A demonstrated commitment to engineering excellence and continuous improvement, including a dedication to performing high quality work safely * Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a collaborative environment within a multidisciplinary team * Experience with Matlab and Modal test software is desirable * Experience with designing, conducting, and/or interpreting data from dynamic mechanical tests * An active DOE clearance
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
