The ACRF Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics at The John Curtin School of Medical Research is seeking applications from exceptional internationally recognised Cancer researchers undertaking high impact independent research for a research-intensive position to foster national and international leadership in medical research. These positions provide seven (7) years research-intensive employment. They provide the opportunity to lead and foster excellence in a range of medical research, supervision of students, professional activities and policy development in an academic discipline within the School, within the University and within the community.
Applicants will be expected to have an exceptional international research profile in cancer biology, an excellent publication output, including recent papers in high-impact journals, and a highly competitive funding record.
The newly formed Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics is led by Professor Ross Hannan. The Department uses the latest “omics” technologies combined with classic biochemistry, cell biology, immunology and clinically relevant transgenic and PDX models of cancer to provide new knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms driving malignant transformation and metastasis. Through strategic alliances with industry and pharmaceutical companies we are translating these findings into new therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Work undertaken in our laboratories has led to novel drugs in Phase I, II and III trials for the treatment of both solid and hematologic malignancies. Our integrated research and training environment focuses on, but is not limited to, the following areas:
• Targeting epigenetic modifiers and transcription factors for the treatment of haematologic and solid tumours.
• Developing novel therapeutic approaches that target the nucleolus and the ribosome, test the ability of these drugs to synergize with standard chemotherapies and overcome drug resistance in a broad range of cancers.
• Use of gene editing techniques to develop new models of B cell lymphoma to understand the genesis and heterogeneity of this cancer and to develop novel therapeutic drugs.
• Developing novel anti-cancer treatments that inhibit tumour angiogenesis, metastasis and identify unique approaches to boosting anti-tumour immunity.
• High content screening approaches using RNA, CRISPRi, CRISPRe and small molecule libraries to: (i) understand cancer cell biology; (ii) re-purpose existing drugs; (iii) identify synergistic and combinatorial therapies; (iv) elucidate novel therapeutic cancer targets; and (v) develop novel biologically active anticancer compounds.
Appointments will be made at the relevant level according to skills and experience of the candidates.
