Hours: | Full Time |
Contract: | Contract / Temporary |
Placed on: | 20th May 2014 |

Job Ref: | 3619 |
Ref: 3619
This position is based in the areas of Scientific Archaeology and Analytical Chemistry.
A two year four month position is available for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. You will join a team of eight researchers at six universities to explore the natural and cultural history of chickens, the most globally ubiquitous domestic animal. The post-holder will work mainly on the extraction and characterization of lipids from archaeological pottery to investigate the role of chickens as a major foodstuff.
You will have a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, archaeological science, earth sciences, or a related topic. You should have some practical experience in mass spectrometric analysis, preferably coupled with gas chromatography and/or a background in analytical chromatographic methods and instrumentation. Experience of mass spectral interpretation and familiarity with laboratory data-system software packages is highly desirable. Any experience of gas chromatography combustion isotope mass spectrometry would be advantageous. A keen interest in archaeology is also highly desirable and you will be expected to present your research to the public.
You will be joining a vibrant research group (BioArCh) offering excellent laboratory facilities and access to the Centre of Excellence for Mass Spectrometry and the Technology Facility. This post will particularly suit someone looking to develop their analytical and academic skills to become an independent researcher through participation in a high profile project of major public interest.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Oliver Craig (e-mail: oliver.craig@york.ac.uk).
The post is fixed term and will be available from 6 September 2014, for a period of up to two years and four months.
