+ PhD in materials science, physics, engineering, or a related discipline conferred within the last 5 years + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2/4.0 for undergraduate degree(s) and 3.5/4.0 for graduate degree(s) + Record of original work to include conference presentations and publications in refereed journals

                                  Desired:
+ Experience in film growth methods (e.g. sputtering, chemical vapor deposition, laser ablation) + Experience with post-deposition thermal and/or laser processing, and structural characterizations (e.g. various microscopies, x-ray diffraction, stress evaluation, etc.) + Experience making electric and thermal transport measurements + Ability to develop and maintain collaboration with leaders in the scientific community within and outside of Sandia National Laboratories + Curiosity about the world and a strong interest in connecting one's research to the larger context of science, society, and national security + Ability to obtain a DOE L Security Clearance + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 for undergraduate degree(s) and 3.7/4.0 for graduate degree(s) + Effective communication and interpersonal skills that foster effective scientific collaborations with a diverse population of researchers + Candidates should also have demonstrated creative problem solving and effective time management skills

                                  Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts leading edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale; and enables the collaborative development of innovative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our main research focus is directed along four thrusts: (1) advancing materials & device understanding enabled by innovative surface and interface characterization (i.e., for photovoltaics, electronic devices, battery materials); (2) the development of nanoporous and nanostructured materials with tailored properties for enabling innovative solutions for broad materials applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, water treatment, and catalysis); (3) advancing our understanding and application of low-dimensional device materials (i.e., graphene, nanofibers, hybrid 2D-solids, quantum dots); and (4) advancing the understanding of thermal science at the nanoscale for novel thermal management applications. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings.

                                  Security Clearance:

No clearance required. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
