The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer and one of an elite group of hospitals worldwide to have its own integrated cancer research program and laboratories.

An exciting research opportunity has opened to join the Bioinformatics and Cancer Genomics lab, based at the Peter Mac. This is a new lab led by Associate Professor Tony Papenfuss at the Peter Mac and is joint with the Papenfuss Lab at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

The lab is seeking an experienced bioinformatics or computational biology researcher to undertake bioinformatics and melanoma genomics research. You will analyse next generation sequencing and other –omics data obtained from melanomas in order to investigate tumour evolution, intra-tumoral heterogeneity and the emergence of therapy resistance.

You will collaborate closely with other melanoma researchers at the Peter Mac, members of the Papenfuss lab at Peter Mac and WEHI, and the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Facilities.

Applicants should have a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics/statistics, computer science, physics or bioinformatics. A strong interest in biology and a passion for scientific research is essential. Previous experience in bioinformatics research and the capacity to work independently is essential. Applicants should have excellent writing and presentation skills and be highly collaborative. Previous experience in phylogenetic analysis would be an advantage. The position requires strong programming skills and expertise in python and R. Familiarity with unix is essential.

A PhD in bioinformatics or a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, physics or computer science, experience in bioinformatics, data analysis and statistical skills. The successful candidate will have an excellent working knowledge of unix.

Excellent programming skills in languages such as python and R, and excellent writing, communication and collaboration skills as well as a passion for science and keen interest in genomics and cancer research.
