Missions

The candidate will work with the “Molecular Signalling and the Control of Parasite Growth and Development” team in the context of an EC-funded collaborative project (FP7-Health) called “Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery in Epigenetics” (A-PARADDISE) involving 15 research teams in 7 countries. The aim of this project is to identify epigenetic drug targets (histone modifying enzymes) and to develop inhibitors as leads for novel drug development. The parasites to be studied by the successful candidate are Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium berghei. The work will involve both the phenotypic screening of parasites in vitro and in vivo and the validation and characterization of target enzymes. In the course of the work, liaison and exchange of information with project partners will be primordial.

Activities

The work will involve the application of existing methods and the development of novel techniques for the phenotypic screening with inhibitors of histone modifying enzymes developed in partner laboratories. This includes both medium-throughput screening of batteries of inhibitors and targeted screening of inhibitors generated by structure-based methods. Screening of a limited number of lead compounds in an in vivo disease model will also be carried out. 

Competence

Skills/ required include:

- Previous experience with the in vitro culture of Plasmodium parasites and phenotypic evaluation, reverse genetics 

- Solid background in cell culture and molecular biology.

- PhD degree and first authorship of high rank publications.

- Fluent spoken English.
