Postdoctoral Associate : Tempe, AZ, United States
The Nickerson lab in the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at the Biodesign Institute, Arizona State University, is seeking a creative, motivated, and highly skilled Postdoctoral Associate to conduct cutting edge research at the interface of bacterial pathogenesis, bioengineering and cellular biomechanics. The Nickerson laboratory investigates the effects of biomechanical forces (fluid shear and gravity) on microbial and human cells, how this response is related to normal cellular homeostasis or infectious disease, and its translation to biomedical and clinical applications. We have developed several innovative model systems to study these processes, including (a) 3-D organotypic cell culture models that closely mimic the functionality of in vivo tissues and their application as human surrogates to study the host-pathogen interaction that leads to infectious disease, and (b) the response of microbial pathogens to physiological fluid shear encountered in the infected host, as well as in the microgravity environment of spaceflight.

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary and highly interactive team of researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise in an exceptionally collaborative scientific environment. The unique ‘open lab' set-up in the Biodesign Institute provides a highly interactive environment with investigators that are leading experts in their field (http://www.biodesign.asu.edu). Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Continue to advance development of our 3-D mucosal cell culture models into complex multicellular co-culture models that better reproduce the total organ environment encountered by the pathogen in vivo during infection, including incorporation of immune cells, commensal microbiota, and other biological factors.
- Application of these advanced 3-D co-culture models to study host-pathogen interactions (focus on enteric and respiratory pathogens)
- Determine effect of mutations in S. Typhimurium fluid shear-regulated genetic loci on stress resistance and virulence characteristics. (Other enteric pathogens as well as respiratory pathogens are also utilized in these studies)
- Manuscript and grant writing
- Success in these projects will be transformative for the study of microbial pathogenesis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Bioengineering, Immunology, Cellular Biomechanics or related topics
- Demonstrated expertise in bacterial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, mucosal immunology, cell culture, cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry, and/or experience in bioengineering and high-resolution imaging. Direct experience with animal models is also highly desirable, but not required.
- Ability to work quickly, accurately and both independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations
- Exceptional manuscript and grant writing skills
- Relevant publications in high quality peer review journals
