Postdoctoral Researcher (Mechanisms of Brain-Gut Interaction) : Wako-shi, Saitama, Japan

RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI) is located in Wako-shi, Saitama, just outside of Tokyo in Japan. As part of BSI, our group – Laboratory for Symbolic Cognitive Development (Laboratory Head: Atsushi Iriki ) – tries to uncover evolutionary precursors of human higher cognitive functions connected to physical morphologies and patterns of structured bodily actions. These are investigated using behavioral and neurophysiological analyses on primates, which were trained to use tools and other apparatus.

Postdoctoral position / Scientist in microbiome analysis

The Laboratory for Symbolic Cognitive Development (SCD) seeks a talented and highly motivated scientist to pursue the divergence of primate cognitive abilities from the perspective of the brain-gut interaction. This research will be conducted under the framework of the collaborative research project: "Primate model of "Mind-Body Interaction" through the mechanisms of gut-brain axis via microbiome." This project is supported by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's (CIFAR) Catalyst Projects to establish cross-disciplinary collaborations between the Azrieli Program in Brain, Mind & Consciousness and the program on Humans & the Microbiome . CIFAR brings together outstanding researchers to work in global networks that address some of the most important questions our world faces today. The research is focused on improving human health, transforming technology, building strong societies, and sustaining the Earth. Established in 1982, CIFAR is comprised of nearly 400 fellows, scholars and advisers from more than 130 institutions in 16 countries. This research project is a collaboration between Professors Atsushi Iriki at RIKEN BSI and Sven Pettersson at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) inSingapore, and is a part of the RIKEN-NTU Collaboration Research Center, newly launched in January 2017. Thus, this is a co-mentored position, such that the applicant can seek guidance from both professors.
