The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), an Institute of The University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk), is a world-leading centre for excellence in cancer research. We are adjacent to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.

Our aim is to understand the fundamental basis of cancer and apply that knowledge to developing new treatment strategies for cancer patients. Our advanced research programmes span a spectrum of cancer research, from the molecular and cellular basis of cancer through to drug discovery, translational research and clinical trials.

The Institute has outstanding laboratory facilities and exceptional core services, including next generation sequencing, microarrays, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics, histology and mass-spectrometry.

We are situated in Manchester, England, a vibrant and dynamic city that is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has excellent transport links both nationally and internationally.

We are currently looking for Postdoctoral Scientists within the Prostate Oncobiology group, led by Dr. Esther Baena. Her group is interested in understanding the origin of prostate cancer and the steps required for progression from local to advance disease. The goal is to identify somatic alterations that occur in cancer, focusing on mutations in metabolic pathways highlighted in our previous studies (Baena et al., 2013 Genes & Development, March 15). The relationship of metabolic disorders and cancer should provide new avenue for molecular intervention and may also help to promote a new field for ETV1-expression tumours that will provide metabolism-based targets for cancer patients.

The successful applicant should have knowledge of cancer biology and experience with in vivo models of cancer, and will work extensively with genomic data and prostate stem cells. They will hold a PhD in Cell biology, Genetics, Biochemistry (or relevant field), and experience working across different disciplines. A deep understanding of solid tumour biology is desirable, as is experience in genomics and cancer metabolism. They will be part of the Movember Excellence Prostate Cancer Center and collaborate with a highly interdisciplinary team that combines in vivo models of cancer, computational analysis and clinical-science, and will relish working as part of a multi-skilled team. The post is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher who wants to facilitate the development of patient-specific therapies.
