Postdoc Position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Agricultural Economics

The Chair of International Food Economics and Rural Development of the University of Göttingen (Germany) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 990 “Ecological and Socioeconomic Functions of Tropical Lowland Rainforest Transformation Systems (Sumatra, Indonesia)”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The position is available from 1 September 2017 (or earlier). The contract will initially be issued until 31 December 2019, but can be renewed for additional four years when the next funding phase is approved. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (TVL-E13) with 100% of the regular working hours.

The research focuses on analyzing socioeconomic drivers of land-use changes in Sumatra, especially the rapid expansion of oil palm plantations. Moreover, impacts of land-use changes on the livelihoods of local farm households and sustainable rural development are analyzed. In terms of methodologies, econometric approaches with household and village-level panel data are used. The postdoc is expected to contribute to interdisciplinary research papers and ideas within the CRC. The position is based in Göttingen (Germany), but will require traveling to Indonesia for data collection and exchange with collaborators. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in agricultural economics, environmental economics, development economics, or a related discipline, experience with advanced micro-econometric methods, proven interest in topics related to sustainable rural development, strong computer and software skills, and excellent command of the English language. Experience with data collection in developing countries and with interdisciplinary research approaches will be a plus.
